In India, “rural area” is not defined as such. What is defined is urban areas. The rural sector covers areas other than the urban areas. The rural areas are composed of whole villages as well as part villages.
In the recently issued National Food Security Act, 2013 in Section 2(17) "rural area" is defined to mean any area in a State except those areas covered by any urban local body or a cantonment board established or constituted under any law.
