Under the Factories Act 1948, factory means any premises including the precincts thereof where ten or more workers are working or were working on any day in the preceding 12 months, wherein in any part a manufacturing process is/was undergoing with the aid of power (or) where twenty or more workers are working or were working in the preceding 12 months wherein in any part a manufacturing process is/was undergoing without the aid of power. It excludes a mine subject, a mobile operation unit of armed forces, a railway running shed, hotel, restaurant or any eating place.
